A stunning performance in his second block of 8 games qualifying by Matt Riley today rocketed him from seventh to top placing and 541 over the card with an average of 233.81 at the Melbourne Tenpin Cup. Born in Launceston, the 28 year-old bowler has represented Tasmania and Australia at both Junior and Adult level on numerous occasions but has recently been absent from the sport’s tournament circuit.
Riley now lives in the Sydney suburb of Wattlegrove and bowls in Leagues twice weekly at Chester Hill and Blacktown. His consistent form at this year’s Melbourne Tenpin Cup has encouraged him to think about returning to the tournament circuit in earnest. “Every year I bowl this tournament – you know there’s always going to be a fair shot, no matter where you bowl” said Riley.
Overnight leader Glen Loader has slipped to 4th at 397 over the card and an average of 224.81 but is still the only bowler in the tournament to shoot a 300 game. Brandon Qualischefski from the Sunshine Coast retains second place with an average of 229.31 and Jason Belmonte from Orange has moved up to third place with a 226.50 average.
Bec Simpson from Darwin continues her domination of the Women’s division, finishing with a total pinfall of 3563 and an impressive 222.69 average. 25 year-old Simpson grew up in Rockhampton and recently moved to the Territory, having represented Queensland seven times at the sport’s National Championships. Former PWBA star Maxine Nable is now in second place, 135 pins behind Simpson with a 214.25 average, with Melbourne teenager Cassie Staudinger from Hoppers Crossing in third place with a 209.31 average. Cassie Staudinger retains High Game honours in the Women’s division with a 269 game bowled yesterday.
Tournament Director Joe Tomasinski announced the cut to the Top 30 men and 12 women last night, with play resuming at 9am today in Matchplay format.
