Yes you can ask but we won't do it. :D If the pin was not knocked over by the machine (e.g. it successfully performed an offspot/out of range cycle) then it must be played where it was left by the bowler's first ball, and any deadwood cleared.

A is correct although what can tend to happen is that bowlers don't watch their pins carefully enough and a late pinfall occurs, so they falsely ask for a restand "because the scoring said there was a 10 pin there".

This is correct and the general rule we use at a centre level.

Free practice for new bowlers will get us new bowlers. It will also cause a massive revolt among the existing bowlers and create a lot of problems where machines need to be maintained due to the extra games but no money is being earned. I don't see this as an option.

One main thing which can make the lanes seem longer or shorter is the gap between the masking units and the pins, which can vary quite a bit from centre to centre.
