Brisbane, (14 August 2017): Teams of tenpin bowlers from Cairns State High School and Edge Hill State Primary School topped the State in both divisions of this year’s TBAQ INTER-SCHOOL CHALLENGE. Bentley Park College was runner-up in the Secondary school scratch division and Redlynch State College won the handicap division.

Held in August each year, the Inter-School Challenge is staged at several Centres in three Zones across Queensland with teams of three players eligible to register in either the Secondary or Primary school division. Students bowl 4 games in the Primary school division and 6 games in the Secondary school division final and are provided with a handicap based on their age. To make things fairer, students who already bowl league or are representative bowlers start from scratch (0 handicap).

All schools are awarded a certificate of participation and medallions and trophies are awarded to those teams that win or place in the State finals. The State Champions have their name added to the perpetual shield and receive a trophy to display at their school.

This year, 10 teams nominated to participate at the Go Bowling Centre in Cairns on Sunday, 13 August, including players from Redlynch, Woree, Trinity Bay, Bentley Park, Cairns and St. Mary’s Catholic College in the Secondary division and Edge Hill and White Rock in the Primary school division. After scores from all around the State were tabulated by the Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland, the team from Cairns State High School emerged as overall champions of the Secondary school scratch division, with the team from Bentley Park College runner-up, and Edge Hill State Primary School’s team successfully defended its title in the Primary school scratch division.

Redlynch State College took the trophy in the Secondary school handicap division and an impressive number of Cairns-based players featured in the All-Stars (top 5 players by pinfall) of both the Secondary and Primary divisions. Mitchell Parsons, Brooke Miller and Jacinta Elisha from Edge Hill State Primary finished second, third and fourth respectively in the All-Stars line-up behind Walkervale State Primary’s Cycle Swan from Bundaberg. Levi Hack from Bundaberg East State School rounded out the top 5, finishing just 3 pins behind Jacinta Elisha.

Cairns players led the Secondary school All-Stars awards, with 14 year-old Cairns High student Bailey Miller from Parramatta Park taking out top honours with a 220 average over six games. Mikayla Cahill from Bentley Park College was runner-up with a 205 average, ahead of Kaleb Coyne (192 average) and Mitchell Williams (185 average) from Kepnock High in Bundaberg and Matthew Purser (186 average) from Helensvale State High School on the Gold Coast.

Inter-School Challenge organiser Linton Chataway from TBAQ thanked all participating schools and the team coordinators who work tirelessly to organise and prepare their teams for this event each year, together with the Bowling Centres who support the Inter-School Challenge competition. “Congratulations to all teams who competed yesterday! “It was great to see everybody enjoying themselves and there were some great displays of sportsmanship,” he added.
